Berlin Tropical mixtape extravaganza

Posted on 08 July 2011 by Marflix

Some fresh mixes outta Berlin. Even if there are almost no tropical parties and massive, nuff DJs jump on the train and work hard to get their people hype on the sound. We want to give you a brief update on what our fellow Berlin DJs have been doing lately.

Fat Eric (Bandulero Sound) – put ya f##k’n HANDS up! #1

fat eric cover

Fat Eric and his sound Bandulero is a veteran. In the last few years you saw him spinning a lot of Coupe Decalé and other african music. This mix contains some exclusive productions by ArtFX who recently did some remixes for Akwaaba Music.

Two mixes come out of the SWS Crew:
Silent Pressure did a mix covering many genres from House to Balkan Tech stuff.

Another mix called Moombahtonito comes out of the SWS kitchen – listen to it at Mixcloud, download at sws-sound.de.

Moombahtonito cover

DJ Zhao aka Ngoma Sounds just did the 10th edition of his Ngoma series.
Umlilo means fire in Zulu, and this mix takes us back to the Dirty South for a scorching ride through raw township sound. Exchanging smooth for ruff, Umlilo focuses on the connection between ghetto Rap and current Electro, between modern SA House and its Kwaito roots.
Umlilo can be found on his website.

Radical Riddims – Festival for Global Ghetto Tech in Berlin

Posted on 10 June 2011 by Jelka

Global Bass, Ghetto Tech, “Fifth World Music”, Worldmusic 2.0 – many names for a phenomen that is getting more and more attention lately not only on the urban dancefloors of this planet, but also by worldwide media (a fact regular readers of our blog will be familiar with).

This weekend ¡RADICAL RIDDIMS! in Berlin will not only bring you an excellent musical line-up, but also an exhibition of international video works, documentary films and lectures, in which the curators will set “the spotlight on the various local musical scenes and ‘hyper hybrid’ club music, as well as discuss the connections and disparities between key concepts like regionality and globality, citation and original creation, copyright and authorship, digitality, internet and web cultures, as well as the phenomenon of image transfer in popular culture.” Well, sounds like a deal. TropicalBass talks to: Sick Girls

Posted on 20 October 2010 by Jelka

The Sick Girls are an institution in Berlin when it comes to a global, bass-heavy sound that makes you wiggle on the dancefloor. They are active as DJs for a couple of years know and well known for their party series Revolution N°5 which brought some of the most interesting artists in contemporary Urban Bass Music to Berlin over the past years (e.g. Kano, Radioclit, Dizzee Rascal, Matt Shadetek, Goldielocks, Mumdance, Mitchell Brothers, Wiley, Spankrock….). On the occasion of their recent mixtape-release on BBE (also including their debut production “V Skank”) I had a little talk with Alex & Johanna about Berlin, ass-kicking music and diversity of styles… Continue Reading

TropicalBass talks to: DJ Chernobyl

Posted on 12 September 2010 by AnnaLove

dj chernobyl_2010_moscow 01

I have not only had an opportunity to meet Fredi, also known as DJ Chernobyl, but I’ve also had the chance to catch two fantastic gigs and steal some of his time to do an interview. This guy has been all over the place and on everyone radar as of lately. We must first give thanks for his amazing hand in producing Bonde Do Role’s album titled With Lazers. If it wasn’t for his discovery of the festive, dance floor shaking, eclectic group, they would have never been introduced to Diplo and therefore would not have been introduced to the world in such a perfect manner. Many of you may know him from a band called Comunidade Nin-Jitsu, with who he composed the first bailefunk tracks out of the Rio de Janeiro’s favelas in the 90s. They were also the support band of Red Chili Peppers in Brazil and won two VMB’s (MTV Music Brazil awards). This guy has definitely been keeping busy producing track for labels around the globe, such as Universal Music Japan, Exploited Berlin, Man Recordings, Mad Decent, and Domino Records. Did I mention he is extremely badass? Let’s hear what he has to say! Continue Reading
